What is balanitis?

Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis (the head of the penis), often causing redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort. It can affect both circumcised and uncircumcised men, though it is more common in those who are uncircumcised due to the accumulation of moisture and bacteria under the foreskin.

Balanitis is one of the possible erectile cream side effects.

Causes

Balanitis can result from various factors, including:

  • Infections: Fungal (Candida), bacterial (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus), or viral (Herpes simplex, HPV).
  • Poor hygiene: Not cleaning the area properly can lead to irritation and infection.
  • Skin conditions: Psoriasis, eczema, or lichen planus.
  • Irritants: Harsh soaps, detergents, or latex condoms.
  • Diabetes: High sugar levels in urine can promote yeast infections.

Symptoms

  • Redness and swelling of the glans
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Pain during urination
  • Thick discharge under the foreskin
